Rutger type R5B Rugger - Blunt Trainer

The Rutger blunt trainer is not a one-to-one reproduction of the original find located in the Museum of Visegrád but a training tool for those who are looking for a blunt tool that represents the behavior of historical Ruggers reasonably well but is safe to use with even minimal protective gear during sparring.

The design of this trainer rugger is very similar to its sharp counterpart, but the blade profile has been modified to provide adequate flexibility for thrusts. The edge line is thickened to 2.5-3mm for safety and to enhance durability.

The tang is simplified, and the grip panels have been cut shorter from both ends; the grip ends in a thick pommelplate, hot-peened on the tan,g and the top portion of the wooden panels have been replaced with steel bolsters. The bolster and pommel plate replace the counterweight effect of the thickened tang and provide better durability for the surfaces exposed to potential stray hits.

The wooden grip panels are fixed with an adhesive, as seen on many historical pieces, and secured with tubular rivets.

The Nagel is a rounded, simplified version of the sharp Rutger and runs through the steel bolsters instead of wooden panels.

The blade is ground freehand from a blank of 6150/51crv4 steel heat-treated to 50-52 HrC hardness, while the hilt accessories are ground by hand from mild steel.

The product is a training tool based on an original historical artifact, made by hand, which means it might bear the signs of its making: small tool marks and imperfections, which do not affect the build quality or usability but give each of our pieces its unique character.
