Antonia is the sister sword of our already known Dorothea dussack. While they share the same blade, we created Antonia with a more messer-like grip compared to the shell guard of Dorothea.

The product shown in the pictures is a production prototype. Minor changes in the proportions of the handguard may occur in the final product.

Dussacks are a defined type of sidearm originating in the early 16th century, first mentioned in the manuscript 'Ergrundung Ritterlicher Kunst der Fechterey' written by fencing master Andre Paurñfeyndt in 1516. It soon became a standard part of fencing treatises, mostly shown as wooden practice weapons in manuscripts.

The type is defined by a now often curved blade, a knucklebow, and usually some extra protection for the back of the hand. The average blade length of confirmed original pieces lies between 635mm and 884mm. The originals and period depictions show a considerable variation in blade types and grip constructions.

A typology created by Per Terje Norheim in 1971 is used even today to determine and describe subtypes and design categories, which was translated by Keith Cotter-Reilly in 2020, the main inspirator of our Dorothea project. The Antonia dussack carries over the same blade, while the construction methods, parts, and design are heavily influenced both by sabers and messers.

As for each of our products, the blade and the parts of the cross are hand-ground, and the handguard is assembled by welding for stability and durability. The finials of the crossguard are solid steel spheres, attached by peening. Antonia is made with a hidden tang, which runs through the grip and secures the endplate by being peened. The grip is covered in leather with gluing and stretched with stitching, as seen on some original pieces.

Please be advised; slight variations and differences may occur in the products due to their hand-made nature and the organic materials used.

The products aim to have the aesthetics of historical pieces, not the finish of mass-produced items. Each product bears the signs of its making; small tool marks and imperfections, which do not affect the build quality or usability but give each of our pieces its unique character.

The weapon is a practice Dussack for sparring and technical drills, perfect for Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA).
