The turning point of the 15th and 16th centuries brought along the largest single-edged weapons with a knifelike construction, the Kriegsmesser, "war knife". Most originals are below the 1300mm overall size, even if some illustrations might show larger pieces as well. Most of the originals have M5b, M5a or M3d blades with various degrees of curvature, while some are completely straight, occasionally with somewhat long-ish false edges. With the Ruggers and Bauernwehrs being analogous to daggers and proper Messers to arming swords, it's clear that these huge knives were created to compete with longswords (Wittenweller equates them the same way).
For a long time we wanted to create something that's directly connected to Landsknechts, so our version is based on "Fencing Landesknechte" by Hans Baldung Grien from 1516, with the handling approximately based on a surviving original with a straight blade.
Blade length: 835mm
Total length: 1175mm
Cross width: 368mm
Weight: ~1600 g
The large and wide M5a blade is ground freehanded with a pronounced distal taper and minimal profile taper. It's sharp on it's entire length.
The cross, following the fashion of the early 16th century, is extremely wide with spherical finials, which are made from hollow brass balls. The steel part of the cross terminates in thin shafts, essentially mini-tangs, which is peened over the brass sphere. It's slid down along the blade, which is another feature often seen on originals.
The wide N5d Nagel is fullered and is peened on the other side.
The grip is made out of beech, and is affixed by wooden pins under the leather wrap. Once again, this detail is based on surviving originals. The vegetable-tanned goat leather wrap is ebonized by iron-acetate and is oiled down well to give it a nice deep luster.
We made 3 very slightly different versions of this Kriegsmesser. Differences between the individual pieces are:
- 1 Nagel is made with 5 wider fullers while the rest has 6 narrow ones.
- 1 tang is partial and hidden, the rest has full-width tangs.
- 1 Nagel is straight, 1 is slightly curved and 1 is aggressively curved.
